Dehydration?
Dehydration is a condition in which the body loses water and other fluids that it needs to function normally.
A typical human body is 60% water. When a person loses 4%-5% of the body's water, it is considered dehydration.
According to the WHO, diarrhoeal disease, which ranks as the third leading cause of death in children from 1 to 59 months old, is both preventable and curable.
Annually, it claims the lives of approximately 443,832 children under 5 years of age.
Furthermore, diarrhea is a primary contributor to malnutrition among children under five.
What are the causes of Dehydration?
Dehydration is usually caused by the following conditions: -
Severe Diarrhoea and Vomiting .
Not drinking enough water or other fluids .
Sweating excessively.
Urinating excessively.
Taking certain medications.
Sudden loss of electrolytes from the body.
High Fever
WHO guidelines for the prevention of Dehydration in children below 5 yrs: -
Encourage breastfeeding until 1 year of age.
Encourage fluid intake.
Teething children should be given more fluids than solid food.
Especially in summers, children with malnutrition, dehydration, and those suffering from diarrhoeal disease should be given 5ml/kg of ORS solution after each large watery stool.
When to seek a doctor?
When a person shows signs of severe dehydration such as cramps, loss of consciousness, dizziness, lethargy, immediate help from a doctor should be sought.
