Control your stress by controlling your pupil!

  • We can regulate arousal by controlling pupil size, which reflects our level of arousal. They get bigger when we're tense or stressed and get smaller when we're calm. A part of the brain called the locus coeruleus controls this using a chemical called noradrenaline. 
  • Techniques like deep breathing and imagining stressful situations can make our pupils get smaller or bigger. 
  • The study found that giving people feedback on their pupil size helped them control their arousal better. Brain scans showed that changes in pupil size were connected to changes in brain activity related to arousal. 
  • These findings could help develop new ways to treat stress and anxiety. The researchers have created a company called Mindmetrix that uses virtual reality headsets to teach people how to control their pupils and find techniques that help them relax or become more alert.
