Hyperpigmentation in Ayurveda!
Having a glowing and flawless skin increases self confidence in a person. But, hyperpigmentation is the most common skin disorder that leaves our skin with bluish- black patches making it dull.
Melanin is the skin's natural pigment, what gives color to our skin. It's made by cells called melanocytes. Although the quantity of melanocytes in each individual is same, the amount of melanin that each person produces varies, which affects the color of our skin. When the quantity of melanin increases in the skin, the condition is known as hyperpigmentation.
In Ayurveda, it is known as “Vyanga”. It is a skin disorder with painless, bluish-black patches on the face. It is characterised by dark spots, uneven skin tone, sun spots, patchy discoloration and age spots. It's not caused by any injury. It is caused by imbalances in the Pitta and Kapha doshas and blood related issues.
Excessive Pitta dosha can result in a build-up of heat and toxins in the body, which can cause inflammation and discoloration of the skin.
On the other hand, insufficient circulation and a slower metabolism can be signs of Kapha dosha imbalances, which induce the formation of toxins in the skin.
There are several factors that can cause more production of more melanin like:
- Sun Exposure
- Hormonal Changes
- Inflammation and Injury
- Genetic Factors
- Age
- Chemicals and Medications
Ayurvedic treatments such as Abhyanga(herbal massage), Ayurvedic Lepas, and lifestyle changes, can be useful in treating hyperpigmentation.
