World Lung Day is observed on September 25th all around the world with an objective to raise awareness about lung health and promote better lung care. It highlights the importance of healthy lungs and addresses the causes and prevention of all lung related diseases.
About lungs and what do they do?
Lungs are a pair of spongy, pinkish-gray organs in the chest.
When we breathe in, air enters our lungs and oxygen from that air moves to our blood. Parallely, carbon dioxide moves from blood to the lungs that we breathe out.
I think we all know how important this process is to be Alive. And that now we understand this, we know how important are LUNGS to us.
7 habits that can help reduce Lung diseases risk
These healthy lifestyle habits help in prevention of lung diseases.
- No Smoking: This is one of the most important habits to reduce the risk of lung diseases. So, “Quit smoking” or “Never start smoking”.
- Avoid second hand smoke: Stay away from the places where people are smoking. If there is a family member who smokes, ask them not to smoke inside the house or car.
- Exercise regularly: Regular exercise strengthens our lungs which help them function more effectively.
- Limit exposure to air pollution:
- When outside: Check the Air Quality Index (AQI) before involving yourself into any kind of exercises.
- When inside: Make sure the spaces where you live and work are well ventilated and well cleaned, to prevent build up of allergens, dust and molds.
- Take precautions against pneumonia and flu: Take an annual flu shot. You may also ask your doctor about a pneumonia vaccine.
- Maintain hygiene: Wash your hands properly after regular intervals and keep yourself distant from the people suffering from pneumonia and bronchitis.
- Eat a healthy diet: Consume a balanced diet including lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Nutrients like antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, have shown impact in protecting against lung damage caused by environmental pollutants and inflammation.
