Summary

  • Ofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat various infections such as pneumonia, skin infections, bladder infections, reproductive organ infections, and prostate infections. It can also be used for bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and certain sexually transmitted diseases when other treatments are not available.

  • Ofloxacin works by inhibiting bacterial enzymes, specifically DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are necessary for DNA replication. By doing so, it effectively stops bacterial growth and kills the bacteria causing the infection.

  • The usual dose for adults is 200 mg to 400 mg taken orally every 12 hours. Ofloxacin is not recommended for individuals under 18 years of age due to potential side effects on bone and joint development.

  • Common side effects of Ofloxacin include nausea, headache, insomnia, dizziness, and diarrhea. Serious adverse effects can include tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, and central nervous system effects such as confusion and memory problems.

  • Ofloxacin carries a risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, and central nervous system effects. It should not be used by patients with a history of hypersensitivity to quinolones, epilepsy, or tendon disorders. It's also not recommended during pregnancy or for individuals under 18 years of age.
