Arteether operates as a potent antimalarial by disrupting the life cycle of the malaria parasite. As an artemisinin derivative, it interferes with the parasite's ability to survive in red blood cells, effectively treating severe cases of falciparum malaria.

The dosage and administration of it depend on the formulation used. For Alpha/beta Arteether in adults, it is administered through intramuscular injection for three consecutive days. Child dosage is determined based on body weight Artemotil, a form of Arteether restricted for use in children under 16, involves intramuscular injections following a loading dose.

While it is effective against malaria, it may have some side effects. Possible cardiac effects include bradycardia and QT interval prolongation. Neurotoxicity has been observed in animal studies. Additionally, patients may experience pain at the injection site, which can be managed by alternating injection sites.

It is contraindicated in pregnant females below 16 years and those with known hypersensitivity to artemotil or sesame oil.
