Lithium carbonate belongs to the class of medications called mood stabilizers works by altering the balance of certain chemicals in the brain. This action may help to reduce the intensity and frequency of mood swings associated with bipolar disorder.

Maintain a consistent intake of dietary salt and fluid intake while taking lithium, as changes in salt levels can affect lithium levels in the body. Regular monitoring of lithium blood levels and kidney function may be necessary while on this medication.
